PICSI

Our IVF laboratories have successfully introduced the PICSI method – a new laboratory technique which is an improved modification of micromanipulation ICSI fertilization.

PICSI increases the success rate by approximately 20% because it enables us to select and introduce a sperm to the oocyte based on its functional quality. This method works on the same principal by which sperms are selected in a woman’s body within the natural fertilization process.

In the standard use of the ICSI method the sperms are selected on their morphology and motility and this does not guarantee the introduction of a sperm with the optimum genetic package. PICSI combines the benefits of ICSI (high probability of fertilization of the egg) with the option to select a mature sperm on its ability to connect to the hyaluronan hydrogel. Hyaluronon is a substance which surrounds the egg and aids the egg-sperm connection. PICSI simulates the connection of a mature sperm to the oocyte complex which is very important within natural fertilization. PICSI is a more natural and effective form of fertilization compared to ICSI.

This method is recommended in cases in which:

  • Sperm defect is suspected, for example sperm immaturity, chromosomal anomaly, a higher number of sperm with defected integrity of DNA
  • Border line sperm count has been found
  • Low fertilization with ICSI has occurred
  • Poor embryo quality has been found
  • Repeated embryo transfers without implantation have occurred
  • Repeated miscarriages have occurred
  • The woman is over 38 years old
